There was a chance that India's innings would collapse and the hosts would lose the match and the series, which was tied 1-1 heading into the match, since they lost both of their openers within the first four overs of their pursuit of Australia's 186/7.
Because K.L. Rahul was in fantastic form and scored a 35-ball 55 in the first T20I at Mohali to assist the side surpass the 200-run threshold. India suffered a four-wicket loss in that game. Rohit, who hammered a 20-ball 46 to help India chase a target of 91 runs, was the driving force behind India's victory in the 8-over-a-side slugfest in Nagpur.
India was in trouble when both of them were dismissed for cheaply with only 30 runs on the board.
But on Sunday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in this city, India overcame Australia by six wickets with one ball remaining and won the three-match series 2-1 thanks to the magnificent fifty-run partnerships of Virat Kohli (63) and Suryakumar Yadav (69).
Despite being dropped early on by Adam Zampa off his own bowling, Kohli anchored the innings and participated in two crucial partnerships, including a 104-run partnership with Yadav for the third wicket and a 48-run partnership with Hardik Pandya (25 not out), which helped India take advantage of some strong bowling from Australia to limit them to 186/7.
Australia got off to a fast start thanks to youngster Cameron Green (52), but the Indian bowlers held them back in the middle overs. Tim David (54) then put an explosive finish to the innings to help Australia reach 186/7. However, Kohli and Yadav's outstanding performances helped India reach 187/4 in 19.5 overs to win the match.
After participating in a 102-run partnership with KL Rahul against the West Indies in 2019, this was Kohli's second hundred-run partnership at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium.
Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 69 magnificent runs, surpassed D.S. Airee of Nepal, who had 626 runs from 17 innings, to become this year's leading T20 scorer with 682 runs in 20 innings.
Suryakumar Yadav was in excellent form as he batted quietly for the first few deliveries before launching a barrage of blows to reach his half-century off just 29 balls. On Sunday, he faced six balls before striking Cummins for a big six; he got across to a short one and pulled it wonderfully over deep mid-wicket.
He hit Hazlewood for a four and six off the same over in addition to hammering Zampa for back-to-back sixes in the 13th over. The six came off the third delivery of the 14th over, when the Mumbai hitter brilliantly flipped a knuckleball on the middle stump over the deep square-leg boundary.
When India rallied from 30/2 to 132/3 and put themselves in a solid position to win the match, he was eventually out for another big one, but this time he was caught by Aaron Finch at the long-on boundary.
After a fantastic trip to the UAE for the Asia Cup, Kohli, who had been excluded from the first two T20Is, went out aggressively at the other end, but Suryakumar Yadav quickly caught up to him and then took the lead. However, after Yadav was dismissed, Kohli maintained the momentum by teaming up with Hardik Pandya, and the two of them kept the objective well in view.
Following Rohit Sharma's dismissal, Kohli, who had just scored a hundred and two fifties for India in the 2022 Asia Cup, produced some incredible strokes as he supported the innings.
In the third over, Zampa over-pitched outside off and then beautifully sent Cameron Green to the boundary over covers, giving him his first four. The former India captain quickly picked up a slower ball bowled at the back of the length on middle stump and sent it into the bleachers over the deep mid-wicket boundary, blasting a six and a four off consecutive balls in the sixth over.
As Suryakumar pursued the bowling, he took a backseat, but after the Mumbai batter was out, he picked up the pace. Together with Pandya, they added 48 runs for the fourth wicket to help India win.
Prior to this, Australia recovered from a mid-innings wobble to register 186/7 thanks to half-centuries from top hitters Cameron Green (52) and Tim David (54).
The big-hitter who began his career with Singapore before moving to Australia, David, gave the innings the much-needed push toward the end as Australia recovered from 117/6 in the 14th over to post a respectable total. Green (52 off 21 balls), who blasted the third fastest fifty for Australia in T20 cricket, gave the innings the early momentum.
In the final four overs, Australia went for broke, scoring 68 runs off 34 balls for the seventh wicket thanks to Tim David (54 runs, 27 balls, 4x2, 4x6) and Daniel Sams. Australia scored 21 runs off Bhuvneshwar Kumar's 18th over and 18 runs off Bumrah's 19th over.
However, Australia finished with a score of 187/7 in their 20 overs thanks to an excellent last over from Harshal Patel, who allowed only 7 runs while dismissing the dangerous David. On 28 runs, Daniel Sams was still undefeated.
The most effective Indian bowler on the field was Axar, who finished with 3-33 from his four overs. Axar produced a strong recovery to pin the Australians back in the middle overs despite being brutalised by Green.
But in the end, the brilliance of Cameron Green and Tim David was overshadowed by that of Virat Kohli and Suryakuamr Yadav as India won another T20I series at home.
Brief scores: Australia 186/7 in 20 overs (Cameron Green 52, Tim David 54, Daniel Sams 28 not out Josh Inglis 24; Axar Patel 3/33) lost to India 187/4 in 19.5 overs (Virat Kohli 63, Suryakumar Yadav 69, Hardik Pandya 25 not out; Daniel Sams 2/33) by six wickets.
