After leading India to a convincing 40-run victory over Hong Kong in the Asia Cup here on Wednesday, Rohit Sharma has eclipsed Virat Kohli as the country's second-most successful T20I skipper.
Sharma, who assumed the T20I captaincy after Kohli resigned, has won 31 games in his 37 appearances, compared to Kohli's 30 victories in his 50 T20I games.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India's former captain, is still at the top of the list after leading his country to victories in 41 of 72 T20I matches.
With a 40-run victory over Hong Kong in a Group A match on Wednesday, Suryakumar Yadav's fireworks in the final seven overs guaranteed India's Super Four position in the Asia Cup 2022.
KL Rahul's struggle came to an end at 36 off 39 balls at 94/2 in 13 overs, and Suryakumar came in and immediately altered the tone of India's innings. He stayed unbeaten on 68 off 26 balls, hitting six fours and as many sixes, in addition to his audacious wrist play and other devastating drives, slashes, scoops, and sweeps that sent the ball flying all over the park. At a strike rate of 261.53, he scored 68 runs, 60 of which were off boundaries.
Other Indian hitters appeared to be batting on a very different pitch thanks to his aggressive stroke-play. All other Indian hitters combinedly managed to hit nine boundaries in 96 balls, whereas Suryakumar managed to hit 12 boundaries in his 26-ball innings.
Along with Virat Kohli, who scored 59 in 44 balls for his 31st T20I fifty and had a 98-run partnership with Suryakumar, the Indian team managed 78 runs in the final five overs to reach the intimidating total of 192-2, which was far from probable at the halfway point of 70-1.
When asked to provide his thoughts on the game, Rohit expressed his satisfaction with the batting display, especially in the later innings. He thought his bowling, however, could have been better.
Young pacers Avesh Khan and Arshdeep Singh collectively lost 97 runs, which the spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja combined to make up for by reducing Hong Kong to 152-5 in their 20 overs.
"We initially batted fairly effectively and reached a high score. We should have handled the ball a little bit better, but we came out and bowled really well."
