It was quite surprising when Australian opener David Warner struggled to score runs in the Ashes against England. He amassed only 95 runs in 10 innings during the series and that was a far cry from his performance in the World Cup prior to the series when he ended up as the tournament’s second-highest run-getter. However, it seems he is back to doing what he does best once again. A splendid knock of 154 in the first Test of the two-match series against Pakistan at Brisbane was followed up by a triple ton in the very next match at Adelaide. Warner remained unbeaten on 335 as Australia declared for a total of 589 for 3 on Day 2. Let us now take a look at the various feats Warner achieved with his maiden triple ton.
- Warner’s knock of 335* is the first triple ton registered in the last three years. It is also the first by an Australian batsman since 2012.
- It is also the second-highest individual score by an Australian batsman in Tests and the 10th highest overall.
- The knock of 335* is also the highest ever recorded in a Day/Night first-class contest. The previous best was that of Dean Jones (324*) for Victoria versus South Australia at Melbourne in 1995.
- Warner also became the fourth Australian opener and the seventh Australian overall to score a triple ton in Tests. Bob Simpson, Mark Taylor, Matthew Hayden, Sir Don Bradman, Bob Cowper and Michael Clarke are the other Australian batsmen to achieve this feat.
- Warner has two 250+ scores to his name now. That is the joint second-most by an opener in Tests. Graeme Smith, Alastair Cook, Chris Gayle and Sanath Jayasuriya are the other players to hold this record. Virender Sehwag has registered the most 250+ scores by an opener in Tests.
