Australia went 2-0 up in the five-match series after beating Sri Lanka in the Super Over, in the second T20I at Sydney Cricket Ground. Josh Hazlewood, who earlier returned 3-22, gave away only five runs in the Super Over. Marcus Stoinis then hit Wanindu Hasaranga back-to-back fours to see off the target with three balls to spare.
Sri Lanka needed 19 in the last over after being set 165. Stoinis began with a wide, and Pathum Nissanka struck the next two balls for four and two. The equation came to 12 in four balls, when Nissanka holing to Pat Cummins off the third ball. Maheesh Theekshana and Dushmantha Chameera then hit a six and a four to take Sri Lanka to 164/8, but it was not enough to level the series.
Nissanka, who made 36 in the first match, continued his form, scoring 53-ball 73 with seven fours and two sixes. Barring Dasun Shanaka (34 in 19 balls), he received little support until valiant efforts from Theekshana and Chameera levelled the team total. None of Danushka Gunathilaka, Avishka Fernando and Charith Asalanka crossed five.
Earlier, Josh Inglis top-scored with a 32-ball 48 to help Australia reach 164/6 after being asked to bat. Chameera and Hasaranga took two wickets each, while debutant Nuwan Thushara and Theekshana had one apiece.
Sri Lanka will look to keep the series alive when they face Australia again on 15 February, in the third T20I in Canberra.
