India regained control of the Kanpur Test against New Zealand by the end of Day 3. New Zealand, 151/0 at one point, were bowled out for 296, thus conceding a first-innings lead of 49. When wickets did not fall, the Indians did not allow easy runs: they went for only 2.07 an over. And once the inroads were made, their spinners, particularly Axar Patel (5-62), kept chipping away at the wickets until they were done.
In the five overs of cricket after that, Shubman Gill became Kyle Jamieson's 50th Test wicket. India finished on 14/1, and now lead by 63.
The New Zealand openers resumed on 129/0, and did not look seem to be in trouble early on. Will Young (89) looked confident and hit three fours before he was pouched smartly by K.S. Bharat – who kept wickets throughout Day 3 after Wriddhiman Saha sat out with a stiff neck – off R. Ashwin. The umpire missed the nick, but India used DRS to get the first wicket of the New Zealand innings.
Tom Latham continued to grind, and got support from Kane Williamson. The duo added 46, but India claimed the new ball just before lunch. Umesh Yadav hit Williamson on the pads and obtained a wicket; this time the DRS backed the umpire. New Zealand went to lunch on 197/2, with Latham on 82.
India applied more pressure in the second session, conceding only 52 and picking up four wickets. Of these, Axar took out Ross Taylor (11), Henry Nicholls (2), and finally, Latham (95). The last wicket was a stumping by Bharat, after he had held two catches. Rachin Ravindra started briskly on debut, until Ravindra Jadeja turned one awkwardly off the rough to castled his stumps to send him back for 13. Tom Blundell and Kyle Jamieson took New Zealand to tea.
New Zealand survived 24.3 overs after tea to add 47, losing the remaining wickets. Axar completed his fifth five-wicket haul in his fourth Test match, bowling Blundell and Tim Southee as the ball started to keep low. Ashwin (3-82) picked up the last two wickets, including that of Jamieson (23).
Brief scores: India 345 (Shreyas Iyer 105; Tim Southee 5-69) and 14/1 (Cheteshwar Pujara 9*; Kyle Jamieson 1-8) lead New Zealand 296 (Tom Latham 95; Axar Patel 5-62) by 63 runs.
