Cricket Australia appointed George Bailey as the new chairman of selectors of the Men’s national team. Bailey, who joined the selection panel in November 2019, will take over the role from the retiring Trevor Hohns.
Bailey played 90 ODIs, 30 T20Is and 5 Tests for Australia. He captained the side 57 times (29 ODIs and 28 T20Is, including in his debut match). He will now head to select Australia’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup and the Ashes later this year.
Hohns will step down after serving collectively on the selection panel for 19 years across two periods, first from 1991 to 2005, and then 2016 to 2021. He has been the chairman since 1995.
During his tenure, Australia won five straight Ashes series, and registered a record 16 consecutive Test victories. Australia’s most dominant phrase in ODIs also came in Hohns’ era as they won successive World Cups in 1999 and 2003.
Ben Oliver, Cricket Australia’s head, paid tribute to Hohns for his contribution to the national side: ‘The impact Trevor has had on Australian cricket has been unparalleled over a long period of time.’
Olivier further added, ‘George is a highly respected leader who is now well established on the NSP alongside Justin as the head coach.’
