Rajapaksa was Sri Lanka's leading run-getter in the 2010 Under-19 World Cup. He made his senior debut in T20Is in 2019, during the Pakistan tour. His ODI debut was against India last year.

He was handed a suspended one-year ban for criticising selection policies in an interview after being left out for fitness concerns. He returned to feature in last year's Men’s T20 World Cup. Overall, he played 5 ODIs and 18 T20Is, scoring 89 and 320 runs respectively.
