Riley Meredith defended 15 runs in the last over as Hobart Hurricanes beat Melbourne Renegades by six runs. The Renegades could only manage 176/6 in the pursuit of 183 despite half-centuries from Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh.
Finch struck six fours and four sixes for his 52-ball 75, while Marsh scored 51 in 38 balls. They added 101 for the second wicket after James Seymour got out for 24. Unmukt Chand managed only six runs on BBL debut. Tomas Rogers (3-35) was the pick of the Hurricanes bowlers, while Sandeep Lamichhane picked two wickets.
Earlier, the Hurricanes lost Ben McDermott early, to Josh Lalor in the third over. Matthew Wade and Caleb Jewell then added 67 for the second wicket. Jewell got out on 38, while Wade missed out on his fifty by two runs.
A 22-ball 37 from D'Arcy Short and an explosive 46 from Tim David propelled them to an imposing total. David struck four sixes and two fours in his 20-ball 46. For the Renegades, Lalor and Cameron Boyce took two wickets each.
