Stuart Binny has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
Binny represented India across 23 matches in all formats – six Tests, 14 ODIs, and three T20Is. He last played for India in a T20I against West Indies back in August 2016. His bowling figures of 6-4 against Bangladesh at Mirpur in June 2014 still remain the best figures by an Indian bowler in ODI cricket.
Binny played for Karnataka from 2003/04 to 2018/19. His best season was 2013/14, when Karnataka won the Ranji Trophy. He aggregated 443 runs at 43.22 and got 14 wickets at 32.64. He was a member of Karnataka’s 2014/15 Ranji Trophy-winning squad as well. He shifted to Nagaland in 2019/20.
Binny made his Test debut in England, in the first match at Trent Bridge. He did not get a wicket, but scored a crucial 78 to help India save the match after a mini-collapse on the final day.
‘It has given me tremendous joy and pride to have represented my country at the highest international level,’ Binny said in a statement. ‘I am grateful to the coaches who encouraged me, to the selectors who put their faith in me. To my captains who entrusted me. None of this would have been possible without my family, I stepped out on the field every day thinking of them.’
Binny began his IPL career with Mumbai Indians, in 2010. He joined Rajasthan Royals next season, and stayed there for four years. After Rajasthan’s suspension, Binny moved to Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2016, and rejoined Rajasthan in 2018 for two seasons. Overall, he played 65 IPL matches, aggregating 880 runs and taking 22 scalps.
His father Roger is the only Indian to win the World Cup as player (in 1983) and coach (2000).
