Binura Fernando, a tall left-arm pace bowler, has been approved as Dilshan Madushanka's substitute after the latter was excluded from the Sri Lankan team for the ICC T20 World Cup owing to a ruptured quad muscle.
The injury Madushanka, a left-arm seamer as well, suffered in practise on the day before Sri Lanka's First Round Group A T20 World Cup match against Namibia caused him to be sidelined.
Madushanka was transported for an MRI scan after she hobbled off the ground on Saturday. The results showed the severity of the injuries.
During the most recent Asia Cup in the UAE, Madushanka made his debut on the international stage and recorded six wickets while keeping an overall economy rate of 7.75.
The T20 World Cup Event Technical Committee accepted Binura Fernando to take Dilshan Madushanka's spot in the Sri Lankan team, according to the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday. Madushanka is a left-arm fast bowler.
"After Madushanka was forced to withdraw due to a torn quad muscle, Fernando, who has participated in nine T20Is, was selected as a replacement. Fernando will depart from Sri Lanka and arrive in Australia to join the rest of the team "according to ICC announcement.
Before a player who has been replaced may be formally included to the squad, the Event Technical Committee must give its permission.
The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 consists of Wasim Khan, ICC General Manager-Cricket (Chair); Chris Tetley, ICC Head of Events; Peter Roach, Cricket Australia, Shane Doyle, Men's T20 World Cup Local Organising Committee; Shaun Pollock (Independent) and Ian Bishop (Independent).
