Chennai Super Kings moved to the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) points table with a commanding victory over Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Eden Gardens. The Super Kings put on an imposing 235 runs for the loss of three wickets, which turned out to be too much for Kolkata to chase.
Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube all struck half-centuries for the Super Kings and carted Kolkata's bowlers all over the park, posting the highest IPL total at this venue. Jason Roy and Rinku Singh both hit valiant half-centuries for Kolkata, but they failed to chase down the mammoth total.
After Roy seemed to have injured his ankle trying to save a boundary, Sunil Narine was sent to open, but he was taken out by Akash Singh on the fourth ball. In the next over, N. Jagadeesan was caught by Tushar Deshpande and Ravindra Jadeja dived low to take a stunning catch at third man.
Nitish Rana and Venkatesh Iyer put up a decent fight with their 45-run partnership, but Moeen Ali trapped Iyer plumb lbw on his first ball. Roy came out to bat at number five and began with a bang, hitting three sixes in his first few balls. He reached his fifty in just 19 balls but was eventually bowled by a beautiful carrom ball from Maheesh Theekshana.
Despite Andre Russell and Umesh Yadav being caught in the deep and David Wiese being trapped lbw, Rinku continued to smash boundaries and reached his fifty in just 30 balls. He managed to keep the losing margin for Kolkata below 50 runs, but it was not enough to prevent Chennai Super Kings from securing a dominant 49-run victory.
With this win, Chennai Super Kings move to the top of the IPL points table, while Kolkata Knight Riders slumped to their fourth straight defeat in the competition.
