Warwickshire and Worcestershire emerged victorious in their respective clashes of the Group 1 of the County Championship 2021. Let’s take a look at all the actions from Day 4.
Warwickshire v Nottinghamshire, Edgbaston
Warwickshire 341 (Rhodes 91; Paterson 5-90) and 264 (Burgess 81; Fletcher 4-38) defeat Nottinghamshire 297 (Slater 77; Norwell 4-64) and 138 (Slater 27; Briggs 4-36) by 170 runs.
An all-round performance from Danny Briggs led Warwickshire to a 170-run victory over Nottinghamshire after they got bundled out for 138 in their second innings. In the fourth over, Haseeb Hameed nicked one to Michael Burgess behind the stumps. Hameed will now join England’s squad for the upcoming Test against New Zealand.
Barring Hameed, the others in the top four all touched double digits, but none was able to convert them into anything substantial. Briggs bowled for more than 24 overs, more than half of which was a maiden, and picked up four wickets.
Earlier in the day, Briggs (50) forged a crucial partnership with Burgess (81) to help Warwickshire set Notts a target of 308. Luke Fletcher picked up 4-38.
Worcestershire v Derbyshire, New Road
Worcestershire 421 (Haynes 97; Melton 3-76) defeat Derbyshire 270 (Critchley 81*; Pennington 4-44) and 128 (Madsen 45; Pennington 5-32) by an innings and 23 runs.
On Day 4, Derbyshire needed at least 39 runs to avoid an innings defeat against Worcestershire, but they could only add 16. They lost by an innings and 23 runs. Yet to taste victory this season, Derbyshire now languish at the bottom of points table.
Wayne Madsen was the first to fall, to Joe Leach. The score read 116 at that point. Dillon Pennington then took a couple of wickets before Alzarri Joseph wrapped up things by getting Dustin Melton caught by Daryl Mitchell.
Pennington claimed 5-32 in the second innings to finish with 9-76 in the match.
