None of the teams from Group 2 was in action on Day 4 of the sixth round of the County Championship. Hampshire had wrapped up their match inside three days, while heavy showers once again played spoilsport in Surrey versus Somerset.
Middlesex vs Hampshire, Lord’s (completed on May 15)
Middlesex 172 (Gubbins 51; Abbott 6-44) and 101 (Handscomb 24; Abbott 5-41) lost to Hampshire 208 (Barker 84; Murtagh 3-48) and 66/3 (Holland 22; Murtagh 2-29) by 7 wickets
Somerset vs Surrey, Taunton
Surrey 206/4 (Burns 55; Gregory 2-64) vs Somerset
There was no play possible on Day 4 of the County Championship fixture between Surrey and Somerset. Surrey skipper Rory Burns scored his fifth half-century in seven matches, which remained the highlight of this contest.
Burns' fifty came in challenging conditions on a surface where the top was camouflaged by the lush and green lawn surrounding it. With the selectors soon to announce the squad for the New Zealand series, Burns has furthered his contention for the opening spot.
However, it remains to be seen whom England drop to accommodate him in top three, considering Zak Crawley and Dom Sibley’s spot seems to be locked, and Dan Lawrence too made a statement of intent with a dazzling century against Derbyshire.
