Division 1

Yorkshire v Warwickshire, Headingley

Warwickshire 155 (Burgess 66; Patterson 4-34) lead Yorkshire 95/8 (Ballance 51*; Norwell 3-25) by 60 runs.

Chris Woakes returned 3-40 in his first County Championship match in almost three years as Warwickshire staged a valiant fightback against Yorkshire on Day 1 at Headingley.

Earlier, Warwickshire were bowled out for 155, courtesy Ben Coad (4-28) and Steven Patterson (4-24). Michael Burgess top-scored with 66, but received little support from his teammates. Yorkshire then tumbled to 95/8, though Gary Balance is still at the crease, on 51 not out. Liam Norwell and Craig Miles shared five wickets.

Somerset v Lancashire, Taunton

Lancashire 364/8 (Wells 103; Abbell 3-63) vs Somerset

Luke Wells notched up his maiden hundred for Lancashire to put them into a commanding position against Somerset after Day 1 at Taunton. Lancashire closed on 364/4 after asked to bat.

Wells shared a 155-run third-wicket stand with Josh Bohannon (50) after they slumped to 27/2 early in the morning. Steven Croft (71) and Tom Bailey (54 not out) added 95 for the eighth wicket before Marchant de Lange got Croft just before the close of play.

Hampshire v Nottinghamshire, Southampton

Hampshire 226 (Gubbins 54; Hutton 3-40) lead Nottinghamshire 29/1 (Slater 18*; Barker 1-11) by 197 runs.

Nottinghamshire reached 29/1 after bowling out Hampshire for 226 on Day 1 in Southampton. Hampshire struggled to reach there, with only Nick Gubbins (54) exhibiting some resistance in their innings. Dane Paterson and Brett Hutton claimed three wickets each for Notts.

Notts were still behind 197 at stumps. Haseeb Hameed already walked back to the dressing room.

Division 2

Surrey v Essex, The Oval

Essex 299/3 (Cook 140; Clarke 1-43) vs Surrey

Alastair Cook struck 140 not out to help Essex reach 299/3 on Day 1 against Surrey at The Oval. Cook was ably assisted by Dan Lawrence (78) as they shared a 145-run stand before Daniel Moriarty trapped Lawrence leg before just before stumps.

It was Cook’s fifth first-class hundred at The Oval. He only hit more hundreds at a single venue at Chelmsford and Lord's.

Northamptonshire v Durham, Northampton

Northamptonshire 183 (Procter 76; Potts 4-42) lead Durham 108/4 (Borthwick 54*; Sanderson 2-16) by 75 runs.

Durham’s Chris Rushworth and Matt Potts ran through Northamptonshire batters to bowl them out for 183 on Day 1 in Northampton. Luke Procter top-scored for Northants, with 76, while James Sales remained not out on 38.

In reply, Durham were reduced to 45/4. Scott Borthwick’s 54 not out then helped them to reach 108/4 at stumps. They still trail by 75 runs.

Glamorgan v Gloucestershire, Cardiff

Glamorgan 264/6 (Lloyd 73; Price 3-44) vs Gloucestershire

Glamorgan dominated Gloucestershire in Cardiff, and finished Day 1 on 264/6. Hamish Rutherford and David Lloyd made 62 and 73 respectively, while Edward Byrom is still in the middle. He faced 185 balls to score 60 not out.

With 3-44, Tom Price was the pick of the Gloucestershire bowlers.

Division 3

Middlesex v Worcestershire, Lord’s

Middlesex 144 (Holden 52; Barnard 4-43) lead Worcestershire 113/8 (Roderick 42; Murtagh 4-37) by 31 runs.

18 wickets fell at Lord’s in the Middlesex versus Worcestershire fixture on Day 1.

In the morning, Ed Barnard and Joe Leach shared seven wickets to wrap up Middlesex for 144. Max Holden top-scored in this total, with 52. Then Worcestershire slumped to 113/8 before bad light forced early stumps. Tim Murtagh returned 4-37, and Ethan Bamber 3-29.

Leicestershire v Sussex, Grace Road

Sussex 310/4 (Brown 111*; Wright 2-78) vs Leicestershire

Sussex piled up 310/4 against Leicestershire on Day 1 at Grace Road.

Ali Orr and Tom Haines added 106–run opening-wicket stand to lay the platform. Ben Brown carried the momentum, and remained unbeaten on 111 at the close of play. He has smashed 11 fours so far in his 185-ball innings.

Derbyshire v Kent, Derby

Kent 285 (Leaning 82*; Aitchison 4-83) lead Derbyshire 1/1 (Stewart 1-0) by 284 runs.

Fifties from Jack Leaning, Zak Crawley, and Daniel Bell-Drummond helped Kent reach 285 before being all out on Day 1 against Derbyshire. Leaning was the last man standing, on 82 not out. Ben Aitchison returned 4-83, while Samuel Conners and Anuj Dal took two wickets each.

Derbyshire batted seven balls after that, and already lost Harry Came. They ended on 1/1.
