Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced a 19-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against West Indies, starting 10 June at St Lucia. Riding on impressive forms in the domestic circuit, off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen and seamer Lizaad Williams have received their maiden international call-ups.
Subrayen, 27, finished third in the wicket-takers’ list at the 2020/21 CSA Franchise 4-Day Cup. He picked up 19 wickets in four matches at an average of 18.89.
Alongside Subrayen and Williams, the CSA has picked four other uncapped players –Marco Jansen, Keegan Petersen, Sarel Erwee and Kyle Verreynne – to their Test roster.
The bowling unit, led by Kagiso Rabada, is at full strength. They have included Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi in the pace department, while Tabraiz Shamsi, Keshav Maharaj and George Linde will be their frontline spinners.
Dean Elgar has led South Africa in Test cricket twice before, but this is the first time he has been appointed their full-time captain. The CSA had appointed him in March. He will be taking over the reins from Quinton de Kock. Temba Bavuma, South Africa’s limited-overs’ captain, will be Elgar’s deputy.
After two Tests, the Proteas will lock horns with West Indies for a five-match T20I series, from 26 June. All five matches will be played at St George’s, Grenada.
