Burns, Lawrence help England recover

England were rescued by gutsy fifties from Dan Lawrence and the in-form Rory Burns. They posted 258/7 by stumps on Day 1. Lawrence is unbeaten on 67, with Mark Wood on the other end.

Burns and Dom Sibley first provided with a decent start, adding 67 for the first wicket before the latter got out to Matt Henry. But Zak Crawley departed for a duck, and Joe Root’s dismissal reduced the home side to 85/3. Burns, however, held the innings from one end, and made 81 before falling to Trent Boult, who made it two in two. Boult, Henry and Ajaz Patel picked up two wickets apiece.

West Indies were 24 at one point and then 45/2, but they could not withstand the sustained attack of the South African fast bowlers. Five West Indians reached double figures, but of them only Jason Holder (20) doubled that.

Kemar Roach then got Dean Elgar with his fifth ball, but Aiden Markram (60) held one end up. Markram added 79 for the third wicket with Rassie van der Dussen (34*). South Africa were 128/4 at stumps, already 31 runs ahead. Teenage debutant fast bowler Jayden Seales (3-34) has taken three of the four wickets.

Ollie Robinson to take a short break from cricket

Ollie Robinson picked up seven wickets on debut, at Lord’s, but has been in limelight for the wrong reasons since. Some tweets from eight years ago, where Robinson had been cracking racist jokes. have surfaced.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) suspended him indefinitely from international cricket. However, he can still play domestic cricket. In fact, he was expected to feature for Sussex Sharks in the Vitality Blast 2021 but decided to withdraw.

‘After a difficult week, Ollie has decided to take a short break from the game to spend time with his young family,’ read the Sharks statement.
