Let's look at some of the important events that took place on Wednesday, June 02, from the world of cricket.
Anderson equals Alastair Cook's record
James Anderson has equalled Alastair Cook's record of making the most international appearance for England. Anderson donned the Three Lions jersey for the 161st time, on Wednesday, against New Zealand at Lord's.
Anderson has played a fair share of his matches under the captaincy of Cook, who bid adieu to the international cricket in 2018. The 38-year-old tearaway has 614 wickets to his name, just five less than Anil Kumble's 619.
With an eventful summer ahead, it is only a matter of time he surpasses the Indian spinner. On Day 1 against the Blackcaps, Anderson bowled 20 overs and got the better of Kane Williamson.
Playing with two squads in different locations is a way forward, feels Ravi Shastri
Considering the vast reservoir of the talent pool that India possess, the head coach Ravi Shastri feels that two teams playing different matches at the same time shouldn't come as surprise in future.
“Playing with two squads in different locations regularly is a possibility in the long run,” Shastri said.
The Virat Kohli-led side has already departed to the UK for a World Test Championship final, followed by a five-match Test series against England. At the same time, a second-string side, comprising mainly of T20 specialists, will tour Sri Lanka for limited-overs assignment.
WTC final will be challenging for team India: Virat Kohli
Ahead of the departure to the UK, India's skipper Virat Kohli opined that playing the World Test Championship final against New Zealand would be a challenging task for the team.
The Indian contingent will reach the UK on Thursday, June 3. They will have to undergo a mandatory 10-day quarantine before breaking a sweat on the ground.
'WTC final will be challenging for the team. But it's time to enjoy what we've has done in past years,' stated Kohli.
New Zealand, meanwhile, are already in the action, playing the first Test of two-match series against England. India will play five Tests against England after the WTC Final. The first match starts on August 4.
Devon Conway hit century on his debut at Lord's
There are few things as pleasing as hitting century in a debut match. Even more pleasing if it comes after years of toil in obscurity. For Devon Conway, who is unbeaten on 136 after Day 1, there were few more things that makes the occasion extra special.
First, it came against the bowling attack led by two legends of the game. Second, the milestone happened on no ordinary venue but the Home of Cricket.
Conway's innings have propelled New Zealand into a commanding position. They finished Day 1 on 246/3.
