Here are some important news from the cricketing world that took place on 10 August.
ICC to bid for cricket in Olympic 2028
The International Cricket Council (ICC) will bid for cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics. They have targeted Los Angeles 2028 because of the vast South Asian diaspora residing in the USA.
Cricket’s only appearance in the Olympics has been in 1900. Only two teams – France and Great Britain – took part. Cricket was part of the 1998 Commonwealth Games, in Kuala Lumpur, and will make a return in Birmingham 2022.
‘Our sport is united behind this bid, and we see the Olympics as a part of cricket’s long-term future. We have more than a billion fans globally and almost 90 percent of them want to see cricket at the Olympics,’ stated ICC chairperson Greg Barclay.
Moeen Ali recalled for Lord’s Test
England have recalled Moeen Ali for the second Test against India, at Lord’s, starting Thursday, 12 August. Moeen is likely to play ahead of Jack Leach, though Stuart Broad’s injury has opened a new slot. Moeen last featured for England in the second Test, against India, earlier this year.
England have been struggling to strike the right balance playing XI in the absence of Ben Stokes. Apart from bowling off-breaks, Moeen will add much-needed solidity with the bat.
Moeen has been leading Birmingham Phoenix in the inaugural edition of The Hundred. He has been in fine touch, and is among the leading run-getters of the competition.
Dravid’s tenure with NCA ends, likely to reapply
Rahul Dravid’s tenure as Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) came to an end in August 2021. As per PTI, Dravid is likely to apply for an extension for another two years.
Dravid has done a tremendous job in developing and honing new talent for the Indian side. He was also head coach of the limited-over squad that toured Sri Lanka for the three-match ODI and T20I series.
However, rumours has it that Dravid may be eyeing the role of head coach of the men’s senior team, as only three months remain in Ravi Shastri’s tenure.
Broad twists right ankle during warm-up
Stuart Broad twisted his right ankle when he slipped while running during a training session at Lord’s. England and India will be up against each other here, for the second Test of the series.
England are already without Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes. As per The Guardian, Broad will undergo a scan on Wednesday. Broad had toiled hard in the first Test match but had only one wicket to show for his efforts. The match ended in a draw after rain washed out all of Day 5.
