On Tuesday, Cricket West Indies has appointed Darren Sammy as a non-independent Director of the Board for two years. Having led West Indies to ICC T20 World Cup titles in 2012 and 2016, Sammy is the most celebrated cricketers of his region.
Sammy comes with more than a decade’s experience at international level. He featured in 38 Tests, 126 ODIs and 68 T20s for his nation. His last appearance in professional cricket came in 2020. He led St Lucia Zouks to the final of CPL 2020.
Sammy has been inducted with Debra Coryat-Patton and Dr Akshai Mansingh as an independent director. However, one slot is still vacant and the board will decide upon that in the near future.
He is in Abu Dhabi as of now, working as head coach for Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League 2021. Peshawar is all set to clash against Multan Sultans in the final that will be played tomorrow.
Sammy was elated over the appointment and expressed his gratitude to the CWI. He also vowed to serve the game in his region with utmost passion: ‘I am excited and thankful for the chance to serve and look forward to giving back to the sport and region that I love so much.’
