A.B. de Villiers announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. In a long, illustrious career, de Villiers played 114 Test matches, 228 ODIs and 78 T20Is for South Africa.
He had retired from international cricket in 2018. His last appearance for South Africa came that year, in a Test match against Australia. However, he continued to play T20 tournaments around the globe.
This also brings an end to his association with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. De Villiers had joined the RCB in 2011, and went on to play 156 matches for them. He is also one of the leading run-scorers for the franchise, exceeded only by Virat Kohli. In IPL 2021, he played 15 matches and amassed 313 runs.
'It has been an incredible journey, but I have decided to retire from all cricket. Ever since the back yard matches with my older brothers, I have played the game with pure enjoyment and unbridled enthusiasm. Now, at the age of 37, that flame no longer burns so brightly,' de Villiers tweeted.
