Delhi Capitals have announced the signing of Priyam Garg, a right-handed batter, as a replacement for the injured fast bowler Kamlesh Nagarkoti. The latter suffered a lower back stress fracture, and his absence is a setback for the Capitals, who have already had a tough time in IPL 2023.
In an official statement released by the franchise on Sunday, it was revealed that Garg was signed for his base price of INR 20 lakh. The 21-year-old had previously played for Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2020 to 2022, featuring in 21 IPL games before going unsold in the auction last December.
Garg, who hails from Uttar Pradesh and represents the state in domestic cricket, has scored 251 runs in IPL so far, averaging 15.69 and boasting a strike-rate of 115.14, including one half-century. He was also the captain of the Indian U19 team that finished as runners-up in the 2020 World Cup in South Africa.
Delhi Capitals finally managed to end their five-game losing streak with a hard-fought four-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in their most recent match. Despite the win, the Capitals remain at the bottom of the 10-team points table.
Their next game in the tournament is against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Garg's former team, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Monday. The Capitals will be hoping that the addition of Garg to their squad will help them turn their season around.
Kamlesh Nagarkoti had joined the Delhi Capitals in 2022, but the pace bowler from Rajasthan is yet to play a game this season for the team.
