India and Pakistan were back in action against each other sooner than one might have been expected, with two ODIs staged in Abu Dhabi, all proceeds going to help the victims of the 2005 Kashmir earthquake.
The first match took place on 18 April, where India won the toss and chose to bat.
On a slow pitch, they struggled to get going, and were pegged back by regular fall of wickets until Suresh Raina and debutant Venugopal Rao added 64 for the fifth wicket.
Their was ended when Raina, having struck three fours, was out for 40. When M.S. Dhoni fell cheaply, it was left to Rao to bat with the tail. Unfortunately, they failed to give him the support he needed, with only Ajit Agarkar making it into double figures.
In the end Rao ran out of partners and was left high and dry on 61, having hit three fours. India were all out for 197 off the last ball of their allotted 50 overs. Shoaib Malik was the best Pakistan bowler with 3-40, but India did not help their own cause with four run outs.
Malik then opened batting with Imran Farhat to give Pakistan a steady platform, until both were out, Malik for 12, and Farhat for 30, including five fours. Younis Khan and captain Inzamam-ul-Haq then combined for what proved to be a crucial partnership of 86 for the third wicket.
Inzamam fell for 40. When Mohammad Yousuf was out cheaply soon afterwards, the door was briefly open for India.
But Younis and Kamran Akmal soon slammed it shut again with an unbeaten stand of 52 for the fifth wicket. Younis was 71 not out at the end, having faced 96 balls and hit a six and four fours. Akmal finished not out 24 as Pakistan reached their target with nine balls still to spare.
Pakistan won by six wickets to go one up, and Younis was named Player of the Match.
