Reece Topley recorded his best ODI stats to date at Lord's on Thursday, England defeated India by 100 runs in the second One-Day International to tie the three-match series at 1-1.
The series will be decided in a winner-takes-all game at Manchester on Sunday after the Indian bowlers, led by Yuzvendra Chahal (4-47), bowled out England for 246. Topley took advantage of the favourable conditions and varied his pace to pick 6-24 in 9.5 overs, the best figures by any England bowler in ODI history.
England was able to contain Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan with maidens in the opening two overs thanks to some nip off the field. Sharma was eliminated early in Topley's show when he managed to get one ball to arrive and hit the back pad for a ten-ball duck.
Virat Kohli looked stunning when playing a straight drive, on drive, and cover drive against Topley after missing the first ODI due to a groyne injury. The scratchy Dhawan was eventually forced to take off his gloves by the big left-arm quick, who then carried Buttler behind him.
As Brydon Carse's full toss was smacked by Rishabh Pant straight to mid-on, India continued to falter under the strain. When Kohli attempted to pursue a wide ball away from his body and surrendered an easy catch to Buttler, left-arm quick David Willey took the significant scalp of Kohli in the subsequent over.
Suryakumar Yadav attempted to restart India's chase from 31-4 by partnering with Hardik Pandya for 42 runs. However, returning for a second delivery, Topley had an immediate impact, shoving a fluent Yadav aside and chopping onto his stumps.
The subsequent 28-run partnership between Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja was broken by Moeen Ali. Pandya had by this time entered the sweep and holed out to square leg. Mohammed Shami smashed two fours and a magnificent lofted six down the ground while playing the long handle to perfection.
However, Topley returned for his third spell of the day, forcing Shami to misplay a slower, fuller ball in the air and was caught at mid-on as a result. Jadeja was clean-bowled while attempting a flip, and Liam Livingstone quickly struck with his fill-in spin. Following a ten-wicket hammering in the first innings, Topley grabbed his five-fer by casting Chahal, and two balls later, he got Prasidh Krishna to slip behind to Buttler to complete a convincing victory for England.
Ali and Willey, dropped by Krishna off Pandya on 1, easily found boundaries despite Chahal, Shami, and Bumrah coming on. Chahal broke the 62-run stand when he pitched Ali slow and wide and got the left-hander out on a slog-sweep to deep mid-wicket.
After pulling Bumrah for a six over the deep backward square leg, Willey holed out to a slower ball that was being juggled far on. The final two wickets, taken by Krishna and Bumrah, kept England's total at 250 runs, which was enough to win and draw the series.
Brief scores: England 246 in 49 overs (Moeen Ali 47, David Willey 41; Yuzvendra Chahal 4-47, Hardik Pandya 2-28) beat India 146 in 38.5 overs (Hardik Pandya 29, Ravindra Jadeja 29; Reece Topley 6-24, Liam Livingstone 1-4) by 100 runs
