New Zealand were 123/5 on Day 1 of the third Test match against England, at Headingley, after opting to bat. However, as with each of the first two Test matches, Daryl Mitchell (78*) and Tom Blundell (45*) came to their rescue. They added an unbroken 102 to take New Zealand to 225/5 by stumps. With Michael Bracewell yet to bat, New Zealand may look for a total around 350.
England rested James Anderson, but Stuart Broad (2-45) struck in the first over, having Tom Latham (0) caught at first slip. Will Young (20) batted for an hour before he played to the wrong line against Jack Leach (2-75) and was leg-before. Broad then had Kane Williamson (34) – who recovered from COVID-19 to play here – caught behind.
Debutant Jamie Overton (1-41) bowled well, and was rewarded when Devon Conway (26) inside-edged a ball on to the stumps. Henry Nicholls (19) hung around before getting out in bizarre fashion to the last ball before tea. Nicholls hit a ball from Leach straight but in the air. The ball ricocheted off Mitchell's bat and flew to Alex Lees, who held the catch at mid off.
Brief scores
New Zealand 225/5 (Daryl Mitchell 78*; Stuart Broad 2-45) vs England.
