England finished Day 2 of the third Test match against New Zealand, at Headingley, on 264/6. At the crease are Jonny Bairstow (130* in 126 balls) and debutant Jamie Overton (89* in 106). England were in tatters at 55/6 at one point before Bairstow and Overton added an unbroken 209 in 223 balls by stumps. However, they still trail New Zealand by 65 runs in the first innings.
England were left in disarray after Trent Boult (3-73) removed a bail to send Alex Lees back, swung one viciously to hit the off stump to get Ollie Pope, and curled one in to clean bowl Zak Crawley. At the other end, Tim Southee (1-78) got one to straighten and take Joe Root's edge to leave England in tatters, at 21/4.
Ben Stokes counterattacked for his 13-ball 18, his only six being the 100th of his Test career. Then Neil Wagner (2-53) struck twice in four balls, first having Stokes caught, then trapping Ben Foakes leg-before, reducing England at 55/6. But Bairstow and Overton changed the complexion of the match.
Earlier, Daryl Mitchell (109) completed his third hundred of the series in three Test matches. He added 120 with Tom Blundell (55) and 60 with Southee (33 in 29) before Jack Leach (5-100) cleaned up the tail to bowl out New Zealand for 329.
