The International Cricket Council (ICC) named England's Grace Scrivens the winner of the January 2023 ICC Women's Player of the Month awards on Monday.
Scrivens became the ICC Women's Player of the Month at the age of 19 after her performance in the inaugural ICC U19 Women's T20 World Cup. Throughout the tournament, she was a dominant figure with bat and ball, earning her the Player of the Tournament award. Similarly, England's captain excelled as a leader, leading her team to the inaugural Final.
Following a global vote among media representatives, ICC Hall of Famers, former international players, and fans registered at ICC-cricket.com, the talented youngster was chosen.
Several superstars emerged on the world stage during the ICC U19 Women's T20 World Cup, and Scrivens stood out during a month in which she performed brilliantly as a batter, bowler, and leader in England's run to the Final.
In seven appearances as captain, the 19-year-old had plenty of success in the middle, scoring 293 runs at an average of 41.85, including three consecutive half-centuries in victories over Rwanda, Ireland, and the West Indies.
In addition to her notable batting exploits, Scrivens took nine valuable wickets at a remarkable average of 7.11 throughout the tournament, including the final wicket as England sealed their passage to the Final in the thrilling semi-final victory over Australia by three runs, the ICC announced in a release.
The England starlet is the third winner from England in three months, following in the footsteps of Jos Buttler and Harry Brook, who won the ICC Men's Player of the Month awards in November and December, respectively, and triumphs over fellow nominees Phoebe Litchfield and Beth Mooney of Australia, who both excelled in the shorter formats during January.
Scrivens responded to being named ICC Women's Player of the Month: "I am overjoyed and astounded to have been named ICC Women's Player of the Month. It was a fantastic tournament that we thoroughly enjoyed. Women's cricket is in an exciting phase right now, and it's an honour to be a part of it."
Lydia Greenway, a former England international and member of the ICC Player of the Month voting panel, added, "Grace played an important role in England's success at the recent ICC U19 Women's T20 World Cup. Despite losing to India in the final, Grace was a true leader throughout, earning Player of the Tournament honours. At such a young age, she was a joy to watch."
