Former Zimbabwe Captain Hamilton Masakadza has been appointed as the Director of Cricket for Zimbabwe with a vision to improve the quality of the game in the country.
Masakadza recently retired from international cricket after the tour of Bangladesh. He took up the position on November 1, 2019, and, according to reports, his role will involve looking after things like “the recruitment, management and interaction of senior cricket technical staff within the cricket affairs department.”
The decision of appointing someone for this role was taken by the Zimbabwe Cricket Board during their meeting in August following their financial struggles, a brief period of suspension from international cricket by the ICC and dismal performances on the field.
“This is a key appointment that clearly indicates our desire to strengthen our cricket across all levels while also improving the game administratively,” Zimbabwe Cricket Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said.
Masakadza spent 18 years of his life playing international cricket for Zimbabwe which comprised of a career spanning 313 international matches. He was a formidable presence for Zimbabwe across all three formats with over 9500 international runs to his name. These runs included 10 centuries and 53 fifties as well. There couldn’t have been a better man than this 36-year-old to serve Zimbabwe in this role.
