Harbhajan Singh wants Shubman Gill to play Test cricket for India. He thinks that Gill should open for India along with Mayank Agarwal in the first Test match.
Shubman Gill’s spectacular show in the recently-concluded India A series impressed one and all. According to Harbhajan Singh Gill is all set for his Test debut. In a conversation with PTI, Singh explained, “Shubman should get his chance since he has been part of the team (as reserve opener) for quite a while without playing any Test match.”
In the first match for India A Gill had scored 83 and 204 not out while batting in the middle order. Then he opened in the second game and scored a hundred which definitely proves his ability to play flawlessly at any batting position. Gill was named in the Test squad for New Zealand series along with Prithvi Shaw. Both of them have strong chances to pair with Mayank Agarwal in the first Test starting on February 21.
Unfortunately, the in-form KL Rahul was not named in the Test squad and Mayank Agarwal had a tough India A Test in Christchurch where he bagged a pair of ducks. The latter also failed in the ODI series but this did not concern Harbhajan Singh much.
Harbhajan Singh opined that Agarwal should continue as main opener while Gill should accompany him. According to the veteran, dropping someone for a few failures is not the right thing to do. “Mayank is a proven player in Test cricket and a top batsman. He understands his game very well. Just because of three ODI innings and a practice game, you don’t drop him. It doesn’t work like that. He has been scoring lots of runs wherever he is playing, so I feel Mayank and Shubman should start in first Test.”
