ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier: Scotland recover, Ireland stumble as PNG, Jersey get off the mark
Day two of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier saw wins for Scotland, Jersey, Papua New Guinea, Netherlands and the UAE. Here’s a brief on the matches that took place.
PNG v Bermuda
Bermuda were bundled out for a paltry 89 after PNG opted to bowl at the ICC Academy in Dubai. PNG used as many as nine bowlers and Bermuda were clueless against a large chunk of them. Only one batsman scored more than 20 – Delray Lawrins – as the former 2007 World Cup team looked listless. PNG gunned down the total in little more than 10 overs with all wickets to spare.
Bermuda 89 (Delray Lawrins 25, Vania 3/14) lost to PNG 90/0 (Vala 53, Ura 33) by 10 wickets
Scotland vs Kenya
While there was no one contributor, Scotland’s top-order got starts and clicked in sync to make 170, a total that was spurred by a late order blitz from Tom Sole. Irfan Karim’s half-century from the top threatened to bring Kenya back into the game but Richie Berrington’s spell changed the game as the part-timer grabbed 3/17.
Scotland 170/6 (Sole 33, MacLeod 30, Obuya 2/12) beat Kenya 139/8 (Karim 51, Berrington 3/17) by 31 runs
Netherlands vs Namibia
At the ICC Academy in Dubai, Netherlands opted to bat and made a bit less than what they made a day ago at the same venue. Veteran middle-order batsman Ryan ten Doeschate made a half-century to lift the Netherlands innings and guide them to a reasonable total of 140. Jan Frylinck was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets in the innings. Namibia in return were bowled out 96 with Paul Van Meekeren taking another three wicet haul and Brandon Glover assisting with three himself.
Netherlands 140/6 (Ten Doeschate 59, Frylinck 3/25) beat Namibia (Williams 27, Paul van Meekeren 3/16) by 44 runs.
Jersey v Nigeria
Highly acclaimed batsman Jonty Jenner and Nick Greenwood stitched a game-changing stand against lowly Nigeria for Jersey as they piled up a daunting total of 184/4 in the allotted 20 overs after opting to bat at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Nigeria could only manage 115/7 in its 20 overs with opener Leke Oyede the only one to make a decent score. Elliot Miles was the pick of the bowlers with 2/22.
Jersey 184/4 in 20 overs (Jenner 57, Greenwood 43) lost to Nigeria 115/7 in 20 over (Leke Oyede 39, Miles 2/22) by 69 runs
UAE v Ireland
Ireland were stunned by UAE at Abu Dhabi by a fine all-round display from off-spinner Rohan Mustafa. The veteran bowler snared 4/18 as Ireland were bundled out for a paltry 125. This was despite a valiant effort from the top from Paul Stirling who made 72 of the 125 runs the team made. UAE lost just five wickets in gunning down the target as Mustafa, opening the batting, once again led the charge with a 16-ball 39 onslaught to seal the game.
Ireland 125/10 (Stirling 72, Mustafa 4/18) lost to UAE 129/5 (Mustafa 39, D’Silva 29, Usman 29, Adair 1/21) by 5 wickets
