BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has stated that the 2020 edition of the Asia Cup will happen in Dubai. Scheduled to be held in Pakistan, the Asia Cup has been shifted after India expressed its unwillingness to travel to Pakistan.
The BCCI had stated before that it didn’t have a problem with Pakistan hosting the Asia Cup, as long as it was held at a neutral venue.
Ganguly spoke to reporters at the Eden Gardens on Friday and said, “Asia Cup will be held in Dubai and both India and Pakistan will play.”
India and Pakistan no longer play bilateral series because of the political tensions between the two nations. The teams have, however, played against each other in major ICC competitions as well as the Asia Cup.
The Asia Cup is held every two years in one of the Asian countries. Since 2008, Pakistan hasn’t hosted the Asia Cup. Sri Lanka were the hosts in the 2010 edition while the next three editions were held in Bangladesh. The last Asia Cup tournament took place in the UAE.
The first Asia Cup was played in 1984 and the latest edition was in 2018 in UAE. India and Pakistan have played each other in the Asia Cup 14 times with India winning on eight occasions and Pakistan five. One match ended with no result. India have won their last three encounters in Asia Cups against Pakistan. They last lost to the arch-rivals in 2014 in Sri Lanka.
