The first Day-Night Test match between Australia and India expectedly ended in a draw. Meg Lanning tried to infuse some life by declaring 136 runs behind, but Mithali Raj did not take up the challenge. Only 22 wickets fell in the Test match – albeit with a day's play lost.
Australia started with Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner. Despite picking up five wickets, India could not dislodge Perry, though she was aided by at least two dropped catches. Perry (68*) and Gardener (51) added 89 before Deepti Sharma (2-36) dismissed Gardener, just after she reached her maiden test fifty.
No lower-order Australian batter reached double figures as debutant Meghna Singh (2-54), Pooja Vastrakar (3-49) and Jhulan Goswami (2-33) bowled brilliantly. Annabel Sutherland, Sophie Molineux and Georgia Wareham scored 7 runs between them. Australia needed 5 to make India bat again when #10 Darcie Brown walked out. Brown's first scoring shot, a four, put them past that mark.
India's then went for quick runs. They scored 135/3 in 37 overs, stretching the lead to 271. Shafali Verma (52) posted her third Test fifty in four innings, while Punam Raut and Smriti Mandhana scored 41 and 31 respectively.
Australia declined the unrealistic chase. They lost openers Alyssa Healy (6) and Beth Mooney (11) in the first hour, to Goswami and Vastrakar. When the captains shook hands, Australia were 36/2. Smriti Mandhana was named Player of the Match for her 127 and 31.
Brief scores: India Women 377/8 decl. (Smriti Mandhana 127; Sophie Molineux 2-45) and 135/3 decl. (Shafali Verma 52; Georgia Wareham 1-12) drew with Australia Women 241/9 decl. (Ellyse Perry 68*; Pooja Vastrakar 3-49) and 36/2 (Meg Lanning 17*; Jhulan Goswami 1-8). Player of the Match: Smriti Mandhana.
