Axar Patel grabbed 5-62 – his fifth five-wicket haul in the fourth Test match of his career – to help India regain control in the first Test, in Kanpur. They bowled New Zealand out for 296 on Day 3. Axar helped India secure a 49-run first-innings lead, which extended to 63 at stumps, as India closed on 14/1.
New Zealand openers Tom Latham (95) and Will Young (89) added 184, but the other nine partnerships combined to score 112. Kyle Jamieson’s 23 was the next highest score, while R. Ashwin had 3-82.
In their second innings, India have already lost Shubman Gill, cleaned up by Kyle Jamieson yet again. However, they will be in a decent position when Mayank Agarwal (4*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (9*) resume Day 4.
