Having played one Test match and one ODI so far on their tour, Pakistan next travelled to Jalandhar to play India in the second Test.
Unfortunately, rain saw the whole of Day 3 lost, meaning that spectators were denied the opportunity of a positive result in the match.
Earlier, India won the toss and decided to field. When Pakistan lost both openers early, the decision seemed vindicated, but 49 from captain Zaheer Abbas and 66 from Javed Miandad helped them rebuild the innings. Then Wasim Raja made 127, in an innings that included two sixes and 17 fours. Their combined efforts helped Pakistan reach 337. Kapil Dev was the best of the Indian bowlers, with 4-80.
India lost early wickets, but opener Anshuman Gaekwad remained at the crease, and he went on to make 201, with 17 fours of his own, putting on 78 for the fifth wicket with Ravi Shastri (26), and 121 for the sixth with Roger Binny (54). It meant that India finished their own first innings on 374, a lead of 37.
Pakistan had time just to reach 16 without loss in their second innings when the two captains shook hands on the draw.
Fortunately, the result of the second ODI, in Jaipur, was more decisive in a match reduced to 46 overs a side due to weather.
India again won the toss and decided to bowl. Openers Mudassar Nazar and Mohsin Khan gave Pakistan a reasonable start before Zaheer top-scored with 48. But five Pakistani wickets fell for the addition of just 13 runs as the innings somewhat imploded towards the end, with several run outs not helping the cause. Madan Lal was the most successful Indian bowler, with 3-27.
India were always in touch with the required asking rate, Sunil Gavaskar gave them a platform by making 41, and Player of the Match Sandeep Patil put them firmly in the driving seat by scoring 51 off just 28 balls, including two sixes and seven fours.
India were able to reach their target with more than five overs to spare, winning by four wickets.
