Since their first meeting back in October 1952, there have been exactly 200 matches played between India and Pakistan across formats. However, it should be noted, that bilateral series, once a regular feature of the rivalry, have become increasingly rare and none has been played since 2012 in any format of the game because of continuing political tensions between the two countries.
The contests are, thus, are limited to limited-overs’ tournaments like World Cups and the Champions Trophy these days, usually played in neutral venues. That does not stop them attracting large crowds, though. Games between the two nations in the UAE, England, and Canada have all proved popular because of the local diasporas.
Of the 59 Test matches (the most recent being far back in 2007/08), Pakistan have won 12 and lost 9. Pakistan have also had more success in ODIs, winning 73 ODIs and losing 55. However, in T20Is, India lead the way, although the sample size is much smaller (6-2).
It should be noted that, where India have the distinct edge is when it comes to ICC tournaments. While both countries have won the T20I World Cup once, India have enjoyed more success in the ODI World Cup and the Champions Trophy (two wins to one in each case). They also finished runners up to New Zealand in the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021.
In terms of their meetings in ICC tournaments over the years, Indian dominance is reflected in the statistics: they lead 13-4..
