Although there have been many momentous meetings between India and Pakistan, one that will be remembered particularly fondly by Indian fans was the 2007 T20 World Cup final that took place in Johannesburg on 24 September.
The pair had already met in the group stage of the competition, drawn in Group D, alongside Scotland. India had made 141/9 from their 20 overs, which Pakistan subsequently matched, for the loss of seven wickets. That meant a bowl-out to decide the winner, and it was India who claimed the honours.
Both sides qualified from the group and progressed through the knockout stages to set up a re-match in the final.
India won the toss and batted, and were heavily indebted to opener Gautam Gambhir, who led the way, scoring 75 off just 54 balls, with two sixes and eight fours.
At the other end, there was lack of sustained support, with Yusuf Pathan, Robin Uthappa, Yuvraj Singh and captain M.S. Dhoni all failing to get going.
But No. 6, Rohit Sharma carried the innings through to the end after Gambhir got out, making an unbeaten 30 in 16 balls with a six. India made 157/5 from their 20 overs.
Pakistan suffered an early blow in response, losing opener Mohammad Hafeez to the fifth ball of their innings. They were always struggling to stay in touch with the run rate. Imran Nazir made 33 before being run out. Younis Khan got 24, but it was left to Misbah-ul-Haq to provide an injection of pace by hitting four sixes in his 43.
The Indian bowlers, though, kept it tight, and managed to bowl out their opponents for 152 with three balls of the contest left to be bowled. Irfan Pathan took 3-16, while there were two wickets apiece for Joginder Sharma and R.P. Singh.
All that was left was for Dhoni to lift the trophy as T20 World Champions.
