A hundred from Suzie Bates and some excellent bowling, especially by Jess Kerr, helped New Zealand beat India in the first Women's ODI by 62 run. The teams will now play the second ODI at the same venue, and captain Sophie Devine will hope New Zealand retain the same intensity. India, on the other hand, need to address a few problems.
New Zealand will be happy with their stable batting lineup, though keeping the upcoming World Cup in mind, they did not shy from experimenting. They sent Maddy Green to open batting for only the third time. On the other hand, Devine came at No. 5, followed by a promoted Lea Tahuhu.
With Brooke Halliday at No. 8, their batting lineup looks long and balanced. Bates and Amy Satterthwaite were the key contributors for New Zealand, but all their last six players all scored in single digits. While they did score 275, they did not last the full fifty overs.
All their bowlers picked up at least one wicket in the first ODI. Jess Kerr got four, including the key wickets of Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur. If they want, they can also try medium-pacer Rosemary Mair and spinner Fran Jonas in the upcoming matches.
India will again miss Smriti Mandhana and Meghna Singh, but Renuka Singh is available for the selection. The absence of Mandhana has created a void at the top. S. Meghana, her replacement, fell for four. Yastika Bhatia (41) impressed again, and she and Raj (59) were the only Indians to put up a fight. There were cameos from Pooja Vastrakar and Richa Ghosh, but nothing major.
With 2-28 from 7.1 overs, Rajeshwari Gayakwad was the only bowler to maintain an impressive economy rate for India. Jhulan Goswami, Vastrakar and Deepti Sharma also picked up two wickets each, but all of them went for over 5.8 an over.
