Over the years we have seen some magical spells in IPL. Take a look at the most impactful ones.
Sohail Tanvir – 6/14
In the inaugural edition of IPL in 2008, Pakistani players were part of most of the teams. Sohail Tanvir delivered a magical spell to take 6/14 against Chennai Super Kings. He started by scalping Parthiv Patel in the first ball of the innings and finished with a wicket on his last delivery as well. With an unorthodox left-arm bowling action, Tanvir was a handful in the entire tournament and ended with 22 wickets at an average of 12.09.
Shoaib Akhtar – 4/11
Defending a paltry 133 against Delhi Daredevils Kolkata Knight Riders needed the experienced member to deliver. Back then Delhi’s top order was famous for players like Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, and AB De Villiers. Shoaib was in his top form from the beginning. He got Sehwag nicked his first ball to the keeper and then hurried all the batsmen with his pace. He got all top-order Delhi batters in his 3-over spell. Delhi was all out for just 110 and Akhtar did not have to complete his quota.
Anil Kumble – 5/5
Anil Kumble’s most successful IPL season was 2009 when the league was taken to South Africa in less spin-friendly condition. In the second match of the tournament, Royal Challengers Bangalore were defending 133 and Rajasthan Royals were struggling with 47/5 in the 11th over. Yusuf Pathan and Ravindra Jadeja were gradually building a partnership and were able to take the match away from Bangalore with their big hits. Kumble gave the breakthrough in 12th over and picked up both batsmen to effectively end the match. He eventually mopped up the entire tail and finished with 5/5. RR slipped to 58 all out, the lowest IPL team total for the next eight years.
Adam Zampa – 6/19
Adam Zampa’s 6-wicket haul against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 was one of the prolific performances of the league. Adam Zampamade his IPL debut against RCB in the middle stage of the tournament and this was only his second game. He conceded eight runs in his first over and then came back at the death with a fiery spell. In the 16th over Zampa picked up dangerous Yuvraj Singh, took the wickets of Kane Williamson and Moises Henriques in the 18th over and ended by scalping three more in the 20th over. Incidentally, this is not only the best T20 bowling performance in losing cause but also the best bowling performance by a spinner in IPL.
Andrew Tye – 5/17
Andrew Tye had one of the most memorable debuts in IPL when he delivered a match-winning performance for now-defunct Gujrat Lions. It came against Rising Pune as Tye began by taking the wicket of a rampaging Rahul Tripathi. Then it was Ben Stokes who became Tye’s prey. In the 20th over of his debut match, he recorded a hat-trick in first three balls of the 20th over to restrict Pune to 171, a target which was easily chased. He thus became the first bowler to take a hat-trick on IPL debut.
