After a long gap of one year, the Indian women’s cricket team will be seen in action in March when the South African women come calling, according to reports in Cricbuzz. The two sides will play five One Day Internationals along with three T20 Internationals. The dates and the venues are yet to be decided, but it is likely that all the games will be staged in one city.
The Eves in Blue last played together as a team on March 8, 2020, during the T20 World Cup finals at the MCG. A few players were also part of the Women’s T20 Challenge in the UAE but faced uncertainty over their next series due to the Covid-19 situation. The BCCI had been criticized of late for canceling series’ and tours for the women players citing the pandemic even though they held a two-month-long IPL and then cleared the path for the senior men’s players to travel to Australia for a full-fledged tour.
“The details have been worked out and the announcement will come soon. We’re coordinating with Cricket South Africa. The dates will be out soon,” confirmed an office-bearer.
The South African team are currently playing a home series against Pakistan Women, which ends on February 3.
Earlier, the BCCI had conveyed their plans to restart domestic games for women. The Women’s 50-over World Cup, which was postponed from this year, will now be held in February 2022, and the top priority should be to arrange a number of tours that will help the Indian women players shrug off their rustiness and enter the edition in the right frame of mind.
The BCCI is also likely to increase the number of support staff for the women’s team, the adverts for which it will release soon.
