England's fast bowling department is facing another setback as veteran pacer James Anderson sustained a groin strain while representing Lancashire in the County Championship. The 40-year-old experienced the injury on the opening day of Lancashire's match against Somerset and was unable to take the field for the remainder of the contest, which ultimately ended in a draw.
The extent of Anderson's injury and his availability for the upcoming one-off Test against Ireland at Lord's next month are uncertain. England will be hopeful that the resilient right-armer recovers in time to participate in the highly anticipated Ashes series against Australia, set to commence on June 16.
With a demanding schedule ahead, England's Cricket Board issued a statement acknowledging Anderson's injury and stated that his fitness would be closely monitored leading up to the upcoming Test matches.
"Lancashire and England seamer James Anderson has sustained a mild strain to his right groin during Lancashire's LV-Insurance County Championship Division One match against Somerset at Emirates Old Trafford," the statement confirmed.
"Anderson suffered the injury on day one on Thursday while bowling and stayed off the field for the remainder of the match, which ended in a draw today.
"His fitness will be assessed nearer the time of the LV= Insurance Test match against Ireland, which takes place at Lord's starting on Thursday, June 1, 2023."
Anderson's injury adds to England's growing list of fast bowlers battling fitness concerns ahead of a busy summer at home. Jofra Archer (elbow), Olly Stone (hamstring), and Brydon Carse (back) are also currently sidelined due to injuries.
Despite the setback, Lancashire coach Glen Chapple remains optimistic about Anderson's recovery, suggesting that the injury is not severe and expects the experienced bowler to return to action soon.
"Jimmy bowled really well in the first innings. He's just irritated his groin. I don't think it's anything too serious," Chapple commented.
"We should be positive about his recovery, but obviously he had done it badly enough not to take any part in the game today.
"It just seems like a tweaked groin to me."
