Delhi Capitals and South Africa fast bowler Anrich Nortje has tested positive for Covid-19. Nortje had missed Delhi Capitals’ opening fixture of the IPL 2021, a match they comfortably won by seven wickets. He will now miss the next match against Rajasthan Royals, on April 15.
Along with his Delhi compatriot Kagiso Rabada, Nortje was a part of South Africa’s ODI squad against Pakistan. They played the first two games before departing for India to join their franchise. Nortje finished the series with seven wickets to his name.
He had tested negative upon arrival but had contracted the virus while serving his quarantine. This is a major setback to the Capitals as they are already missing their marquee all-rounder, Axar Patel, who is also down with COVID-19. As Covid-19 cases are increasing at a rapid pace, the apex council is now testing players on a daily basis.
DC had roped in Nortje last year as a replacement for Chris Woakes, who made himself unavailable for the whole season to prioritise his international commitments. Nortje did not take time to settle and impressed one and all with his pace and hostility. He ended the season with 22 wickets, while Rabada picked up 30 wickets in 17 matches. Delhi Capitals will miss his presence.
