For IPL 2022, the BCCI will use the format they had used in 2011, the only other season that featured 10 teams. The teams are pooled in two groups, seeded on the basis of a number of IPL titles and final appearances.
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians have been drawn with Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants in Group A. Group B is headed by Chennai Super Kings, and consists of Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Titans.
Group A | Group B |
Mumbai Indians | Chennai Super Kings |
Kolkata Knight Riders | Sunrisers Hyderabad |
Rajasthan Royals | Royal Challengers Bangalore |
Delhi Capitals | Punjab Kings |
Lucknow Super Giants | Gujarat Titans |
Each team will play two matches against the remaining four teams from their own group and one team, of corresponding rank, from the other group.
For example, Chennai Super Kings will play twice against all four teams from Group B and Mumbai Indians from Group A. The remaining four matches will be against the other four teams of different groups.
'The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League will be played in a bio-secure environment at a single hub to avoid air travel which is considered as a major threat for the spread of Covid-19 infection, thereby affecting the players and the League/matches,' stated the BCCI.
