Mumbai Indians suffered their fifth successive defeat in the Indian Premier League 2022. Punjab Kings beat them by 12 runs at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Fifties from Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan and cameos from Shahrukh Khan and Jitesh Sharma propelled Punjab to 198/5.
In reply, Mumbai could only manage 186/9. Dewald Brevis got 49 and Suryakumar Yadav 43, but the rest was unable to add anything substantial. Odean Smith did well to defend 22 runs in the last over, and finished with figures of 4-30.
Punjab Kings 198/5 in 20 overs
After a string of failures, the opening duo of Agarwal and Dhawan finally added 97. Mayank started off with two fours off Basil Thampi, while Dhawan welcomed Jaydev Unadkat with a six over extra cover. After a couple of quiet overs, Mayank went berserk, smashing a six and two fours to bring 17 runs in M. Ashwin's over. Ashwin, however, kept things tight in his next over. He also drew the blood when Mayankâs attempted slog went to Suryakumar.
The move to send Jonny Bairstow at No. 3 has not quite worked for Punjab. Unadkat bowled him for 12 tonight. Bairstow's compatriot Liam Livingstone fell to Jasprit Bumrah in the next over. Dhawan, too, found difficult to find the boundary regularly once Agarwal fell, and fell for 70.
Jitesh Sharma (30 off 15) and Shahrukh Khan (15 off 6) then struck two sixes each in the death overs to propel Punjab to 198/5.
Mumbai Indians 186/9 in 20 overs
Rohit Sharma was lucky to see his outside edge flying over the man at first slip. A ball later, he scooped a pitched-up ball over fine leg for the first six of the innings. He also struck two fours and a six off Kagiso Rabada before Vaibhav Arora caught his top-edged pull.
Brevis and Verma then added 84 in less than six overs. Brevis struck four fours in five sixes for his 25-ball 49, while Verma made 36 in 20 balls. At this point Mumbai seemed favourites, but Brewis' dismissal pushed them on to the back foot.
Kieron Pollard and Suryakumar were then involved in a terrible mix up that culminated in a run out of the former. Suryakumar, however, finished the over with two successive sixes to bring down the equation to 33 off 18.
He Yadav started the 19th over with a four, but Rabada had him caught by Odean Smith to reduce Mumbai to 177/6. In the last over, Odean Smith claimed three wickets to restrict Mumbai 12 runs short of the target.
