Chennai Super Kings beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 13 runs in Match 46 of the Indian Premier League at MCA Stadium in Pune. Ruturaj Gaikwad slammed 99 in 57 balls, while Devon Conway remained unbeaten on a 55-ball 85. In reply to Chennai's 202/2, Hyderabad could only manage 189/6.

Chennai Super Kings 202/2 in 20 overs

Chennai managed only 40 in the Powerplay. Conway was not at his fluent best, forcing Gaikwad to take risks in the middle overs. However, Conway did well to get quick runs after a sluggish start. Against Umran Malik, Gaikwad brought 33 runs in 12 overs, including two sixes.

Washington Sundar seemed to have injured himself, forcing Sunrisers to bowl Aiden Markram, who conceded away 36 runs in three overs. Marco Jansen's first three overs went for just 18, but his figures were destroyed by an expensive fourth over, in which Conway struck two sixes and a four.

Gaikwad was unlucky to miss out on a well-deserved hundred when his half-hearted cut, off T. Natarajan, found Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Natarajan also got M.S. Dhoni, who promoted himself to No. 3, as Chennai finished on 202/2.

Sunrisers Hyderabad 189/6 in 20 overs

Abhishek Sharma and Kane Williamson got the Sunrisers off to a fiery start, adding 58 in 35 balls for the first wicket. Abhishek rode on his luck to reach 39 before Mukesh Choudhary had him caught by Dwaine Pretorius. Choudhary struck again next ball to get Rahul Tripathi. Hyderabad struggled to get big overs, and fell far behind the asking rate.

Markram and Shashank Singh were unable to score anything substantial. Nicholas Pooran (64 not out in 33 balls) stayed until the end, hitting three sixes and a four in the last over, off Choudhary, to reduce the margin of defeat and salvage some net run rate. An over ago, he had been dropped by Mitchell Santner and Maheesh Theekshana.
