Jasprit Bumrah's 5-10 – the best figures by anyone in IPL 2022 – went in vain as Mumbai Indians fell 52 runs short of the target set by Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 56 of the season, at the D.Y. Patil Cricket Stadium. For Kolkata, Venkatesh Iyer top-scored with 43 before Pat Cummins and Andre Russell shared five wickets.
Kolkata Knight Riders 165/9 in 20 overs
After trying out different opening combinations, Kolkata Knight Riders returned Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane, the pair they started this season with. Venkatesh gave a glimpse of last year's form, scoring regular boundaries in the Powerplay to get Kolkata off to a great start. Rahane, meanwhile, struggled to get going.
Kumar Kartikeya finally broke the 60-run stand when he had Venkatesh caught by Daniel Sams for 43. Almost five overs later, Kartikeya struck again, bringing an end to Rahane's agonising stay, during which he played 24 balls for his 25.
Nitish Rana started slowly but seamlessly shifted through the gears. He scored 43 off 26 balls before Bumrah exploited his weakness against the short ball to perfection. Bumrah then ran through the middle and lower order, getting three wickets in the 18th over to finish with 4-1-10-5.
Mumbai Indians 113 in 17.3 overs
It took Tim Southee only six balls to push Mumbai Indians to the back foot. He gave away just two runs and prised out a crucial wicket of Rohit Sharma in his opening over. Tilak Verma got out cheaply as well. Brought in as a replacement for the injured Suryakumar Yadav, Ramandeep Singh looked rusty during his 16-ball stay, and unable to even hit a single boundary. Kishan, meanwhile, played cautiously and reached his fifty.
Cummins then picked up Kishan, Sams, and M. Ashwin in the same over with short-pitched balls, effectively sealing the match. Meanwhile, Kieron Pollard's horrible run continued, as he scored 15 in 16 balls before getting run out.
