Sunil Joshi, a former India left-arm spinner, was named spin bowling coach of the Punjab Kings ahead of the 2023 Indian Premier League season on Monday (IPL).
"We are delighted to announce the appointment of former Indian left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi as Punjab Kings' spin bowling coach," the franchise announced on Twitter.
Joshi was most recently a member of the India senior men's selection committee, where he served as chairman until March 2020, when Chetan Sharma took his place on the five-member panel. He served on the committee until the BCCI appointed a new panel in January 2023.
Joshi played 15 Tests and 69 One-Day Internationals for India between 1996 and 2001, taking 41 and 69 wickets. He also played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2008 and 2009 IPL seasons.
Joshi has coached senior men's teams in the Ranji Trophy for Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir, and Assam. He had previously worked as the spin-bowling coach for the men's teams of Oman, Bangladesh, and the United States of America.
Previously, Punjab hired former India opener Wasim Jaffer as their batting coach and ex-South Africa fast-bowler Charl Langeveldt as their bowling coach in November 2022. Former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Brad Haddin was also hired as an assistant coach.
After former India head coach Anil Kumble's contract was not renewed, they appointed England's 2019 ODI World Cup winning coach Trevor Bayliss as their head coach in September 2022.
Punjab also named veteran left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan as captain for the IPL 2023 season, after releasing 2022 season skipper Mayank Agarwal, who was selected by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Player Auction in Kochi in December last year.
Despite having an ultra-attacking batting lineup, Punjab finished sixth on the points table in the ten-team IPL 2022 and missed out on the playoffs.
