Although the Deccan Chargers only played four seasons in the IPL before their licence was terminated under controversial circumstances in 2012, fans of the franchise can still look back fondly to the events of 2009.

That is because that was the year, they won the IPL, something the Bangalore, Punjab, and Delhi franchises, who have contested every season of the league, have never done.

The second year of the IPL was different, not least because the tournament was shifted to South Africa to avoid clashing with the Indian general elections.

Having finished bottom of the table in the inaugural season, the Chargers may not have had great expectations heading into the new campaign. However, they squeezed into the semi-finals, edging out Punjab on net run rate. They then pulled off a surprise by beating Delhi, who had topped the league, by six wickets in their semi-final.

Their opponents in the final, which was played at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, were the Royal Challengers Bangalore, who also recorded a six-wicket victory, over the Chennai Super Kings in their own semi-final.

Bangalore won the toss and decided to field, and Anil Kumble removed Deccan captain and dangerman Adam Gilchrist off just the third ball of the match. Kumble went on to take 4-16. It was left to Herschelle Gibbs, batting in his home country, to stitch the Deccan innings together with an unbeaten 53 including two sixes. He was supported by Andrew Symonds (33) and Rohit Sharma (24).

Still, there was a feeling that 143/6 from 20 overs was not enough, and Bangalore should have had no problem chasing that down.

Instead, left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, supported by the rest of the bowling attack, kept pegging back Bangalore back with regular wickets, while Gilchrist came up with no fewer than three stumpings. Roelof van de Merwe top-scored for Bangalore with 32, and Ross Taylor made 27, but only two other men made into double figures.

The best they could muster was 137/9. The Chargers won by six runs. Ojha finished with 3-28, but the Player of the Match award went to Kumble, a consolation after what had been a disappointing defeat.
