IPL fun facts: Part One Image

Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has proved to be a huge commercial and sporting success, and has had a global audience of hundreds of millions, not just Indians but among cricket lovers everywhere.

Not surprisingly, a tournament of this magnitude throws up lots of facts and statistics, some well-known, others rather more obscure.

It could have been a one-day tournament

The idea was first proposed by Lalit Modi, mastermind behind the IPL, in 1995. He had originally envisaged it as a 50-over-a-side tournament. However, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) had rejected the idea.

It took until 2007 when the rebel Indian Cricket League was launched by Zee TV that the idea was dusted off the shelf and repackaged in the format known today.

Most successful teams in IPL history

The Mumbai Indians are the most successful team in the history of the IPL. They have won it in five occasions and finished runners-up in 2010.

Following close behind them are the Chennai Super Kings. They have won it four times (including last year in 2021), and have appeared in a further five finals (in itself a record).

The Kolkata Knight Riders, who clinched the title in 2012 and 2014, are the only other franchise to have won it more than once.

Teams that have never won the IPL

Setting aside the Lucknow Super Giants and the Gujarat Titans who are new expansion franchises in 2022, there are a number of teams that have never won the IPL.

The Kochi Tuskers Kerala only played one season (2011) before being disbanded. A similar fate awaited Pune Warriors India after their three seasons in the league.

Meanwhile, Rising Pune Supergiant and the Gujarat Lions only featured because the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals were serving a two-year ban because of the involvement of their owners in illegal betting activity.

The only sides that have been part of the IPL from the very start, have played in every tournament, but are yet to enjoy ultimate success are the Delhi capitals (originally Delhi Daredevils) and the Punjab Kings (originally Kings XI Punjab).

The closest for both teams were runners-up. Punjab lost the 2014 final to Kolkata, while Delhi lost the 2020 final to Mumbai.
