Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings (previously Kings XI Punjab), and Delhi Capitals (previously Delhi Daredevils) are the only franchises to have competed in all 14 completed editions of the IPL without ever winning it. Bangalore have made it to the final, but this piece is about their many records.
Most scores under 100
RCB have recorded the most scores under 100 – five so far. And that does not mean they have been dismissed every time either. They once batted out their 20 overs and finished on 96/8.
Lowest total
The count of five, mentions above, includes that dismal occasion in 2017 when the entire team was bowled out in less than 10 overs by the Kolkata Knight Riders for just 49. That remains the lowest total in the history of the competition.
Highest total
On a happier note, Bangalore also hold the record for the highest total scored in an IPL match.
That was the 263/5 they notched up against the Pune Warriors India on 23 April 2013 in Bengaluru. That match also saw the highest ever scored by an individual in an IPL match – or, that matter, in all T20 cricket – the 175 not out from Chris Gayle, scored off just 66 balls and featuring 17 sixes and 13 fours. Needless to say, no innings has ever featured more sixes.
Bangalore also hold the record for the second highest score in IPL history.
Highest partnership for any wicket
That came in the match against the Gujarat Lions in May 2016. On that occasion Gayle was dismissed early, bringing A.B. de Villiers to the crease to join Virat Kohli. The pair proceeded to put on 229 for the second wicket in exactly 16 overs, at more than 14 an over. That Is a record for any partnership in the history of the competition.
Kohli was dismissed off the penultimate ball of the innings for 109, but de Villiers finished on 129 not out, as Bangalore racked up 248/3. The Lions could only muster 104 in their reply, and slumped to a 144-run defeat.
Biggest defeat in IPL history
However, that is not the biggest defeat in IPL history. That dubious distinction belongs to the Delhi Daredevils in a match against the Mumbai Indians the following year. Batting first, Mumbai set a target of 213, but Delhi could only score 66 in reply, to lose by 146 runs.
