An 87-run second-wicket stand between William Porterfield (63 runs in 87 balls) and Andy Balbirnie (65 in 79) put Ireland in a commanding position before persistent rain had the last laugh in their first ODI against South Africa in Dublin. Only 40.2 overs of play were possible in the game, with Ireland posting 195/4.
The match had a delayed start of 45 minutes due to a wet outfield. It was again paused for 75 minutes after the 35th over because of rain, and the match was reduced to 43 overs a side. But the rain returned soon after that. In the end, the on-field umpires were forced to call off the match after the time crossed for the cut-off for a 20-over chase.
Earlier, Temba Bavuma won the toss and asked Ireland to bat. Paul Stirling (13) struggled throughout his 40-ball stay before falling to Andile Phehlukwayo (1-39). Ireland were 41/1 after 13 overs.
Balbirnie was dropped on 15 by Aiden Markram at first slip. He made full use of it in his 102-ball stand with Porterfield to take Ireland to 128.
The partnership came to an end in the 31st over after Porterfield went for a reverse sweep against Tabraiz Shamsi (1-35) but mistimed. Markram managed to take the catch this time, at the same place. Harry Tector (25 in 28) and Mark Adair (16* in 8) chipped in with useful contributions before rain washed out the contest.
Brief scores:
Ireland 195/4 in 40.2 overs (Andrew Balbirnie 65; Kagiso Rabada 2-43) vs South Africa. No result.
