Former pace bowler Jason Gillespie believes that Australia should consider leaving out experienced opener David Warner from the fourth Ashes Test, even if they win the ongoing third Test to seal the series.
Warner's performance in the Ashes series has been disappointing, with only one score of fifty or more. In his six innings so far, he has managed scores of 9, 36, 66, 25, 4, and 1.
Gillespie suggests that introducing a younger player like Matt Renshaw for the final two Tests of the Ashes series would be beneficial for the Australian team.
"I am a bit torn over what Australia should do. Part of me thinks they should make a change if they win this Test and seal the series. That way, they are moving forward and they get to take a look at someone else. For me, that would mean Matt Renshaw coming in, rather than reshuffling the order," Gillespie wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.
Gillespie acknowledges the need for Australia to transition away from relying on Warner in the long term. However, he highlights the challenge of finding a suitable replacement who can match Warner's exceptional slip-catching skills.
"One thing that will be missed when Dave goes is his exceptional slip catching. I don't remember him missing too many. You might have someone who can average 10 runs more than him, but if they drop a couple of chances and cost you big runs, it's a negative. Someone who can catch at slip is like gold dust," he said.
Gillespie's perspective adds an interesting dimension to the selection dilemma that Australia may face if they secure victory in the ongoing third Ashes Test. The decision regarding Warner's inclusion for the remaining matches will require careful consideration as the team plans for the future while balancing the immediate goals of winning the Ashes series.
